How do you sleep?

I suppose there isn’t much to say since sleeping is a mostly peaceful state.  However, our son rolls around a lot.  I’m assuming he had a lot of room when he lived with his foster parents.  Also, I’m guessing that he wasn’t as skilled at rolling as he is now.  So, while he may have tried, he probably didn’t get very far.

Now, on the other hand, he is constantly rolling into the sides of the crib.  When he sleeps with us, he rolls into us.  Sometimes, he hits so hard, I wonder how he doesn’t wake himself up.  Still, I think that some of this movement is contributing to his wakings.

I know that we all go through sleep cycles.  At some points, we’re in a lighter sleep state and can be awakened easily.  I think when he rolls around and is in the lighter sleep state, he can actually wake himself up.

At a recent doctor visit, we were informed of a “theory” that babies have a light sleep moment about 45 minutes into sleep.  This would explain the approx. hourly wakings we sometimes experience.  I figure this is especially true if he’s rolling around because he is in a light sleep and hitting the sides of the crib.

I considered putting in some padding in the form of soft stuff, but even when he sleeps with us and bumps into us and out soft stuff, he still wakes up, so I don’t think it would help.  Ultimately, I don’t know why he wakes up.  Unless it’s gas or teething, I’m usually at a loss about why he wakes up.  Most of the time, it seems, that he just doesn’t realize he can just put his head down and go to sleep.

But, now, I’m getting into how he wakes up.  That’s a different post for another day (but probably tomorrow).
